Dating to the latter part of the 19th century, this impressive brass cased aneroid barometer is signed 'J. H. Steward, 406 & 66. Strand, & 54. Cornhill, & 63. St Pauls Church Yd, LONDON, 1443', a prolific maker of all types of barometers, along with other optical and mathematical instruments during the second half of the 19th century.

The barometer has a curved Fahrenheit thermometer on a silvered aluminium dial, and features a stepped outer chapter ring showing a barometric scale reading 28 to 31 inches, along with an altimeter scale from zero to 2,000 feet.

The brass case is in good dent free condition, and although the hanging ring is a later replacement, it is in full working order passing the bag pressure test, with the thermometer line also intact.

Measuring 4½" (115 mm) in diameter by 2" (50 mm) in depth, this substantial, high quality instrument has a bevelled glass crystal with a needle trend marker attached to a rotating brass bezel, and weighs just over 940 grams.
